Sports Illustrated has named New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees—who led his team to its first Super Bowl victory—its Sportsman of the Year, a title that the magazine has conferred on only three other NFL players in the past 20 years. And our own Walter Iooss photographed him for the cover story.

“We shot in New Orleans, at an old football stadium under the stands,” Walter tells me. “Available light. Very old-school. Drew had just done two shoots before he got to me late in the afternoon—never a good thing. But he was a pro and focused, and did the job. He was hungry and tired but stood tall. I shot this photo May 19th, long before anyone thought he would be Sportsman.”
