This month, award-winning commercial photographer Craig Cutler resolved to create new personal work once a week, every week, for a full year, no exceptions. He established a schedule and made a commitment: Every Thursday, starting today, I’ll post his latest round, including sketches, when applicable, in a series of blog posts titled “CC52.” (The name derives from his initials and the number of weeks in a year.) But beyond that, there is no plan; Craig will follow his artistic impulses wherever they lead him.
“We’re trained to see things that we see around us every day in a certain way; it becomes a habit,” the painter Robert Ryman once explained to arts journalist Barbaralee Diamonstein in an interview. “But there are other ways of seeing, other possibilities.” Craig’s commercial work has always challenged our ways of seeing things, and “CC52” offers a rare chance to witness his creative process at its most free. We’re excited by the possibilities.
