It’s Stockland Martel’s 30th anniversary

Stockland Martel turns 30 this year. Thirty! It’s hard to believe, but it was three decades ago that Bill Stockland and Maureen Martel officially started the agency. At the time, the office was just a closet-sized room in Midtown equipped with two desk phones that weren’t even connected—if a call for Bill came in on the phone that was on Maureen’s desk (or vice versa), the two of them had to get up and switch seats.

More fun facts:

• They repped only two photographers back then: a lifestyle  photographer and a still-life shooter.

• Photo repping was regional at the time, so their clients were all here in NYC.

• When they went on appointments, Bill and Maureen physically lugged the portfolios with them. They both joke that their backs  still feel it.

• They typed the estimate for their first major job on a typewriter, using carbon paper and starting over when they made a mistake.

We’ll be celebrating their successful three decades (and counting) on the blog throughout the year. For now, we’ll leave you with this: the very first promo they sent out as a team, plus a photo of them at an industry event in the 1980s…

I always enjoy looking at old photos. The clarity isn’t sharp yet still clear. Colors isn’t saturation but still colorful. Interesting to see Maureen wearing light colors whereas Bill is more dark. Sorta like as if they complete each other, a balance of both sides. Cheers to Stockland Maureen!

COngratulations to all of you, but especially Maureen and Bill. I actually think you are both even better looking now than you were then… forever young!

I remember the first time i met Maureen. My father’s travel agent, Selma Kon was also her travel agent. I was still in college, maybe 19 years old and had a passing interest in photography. And I had no idea what i wanted to be when I grew up. This was 15 years before it even occurred to me to become a producer! Maureen was so kind and took the time to meet with me and tell me about what she did, and how the industry worked, and what it would take to make it in the business. I have never forgotten the moment or her generosity. Congratulations to all of you! Wendy
