Featured Personal Project: Walter Iooss’ mixed-media works

Walter Iooss has been with Stockland Martel since 1984. And as one of the most respected and prolific sports photographers in the world, he’s got a treasure trove of images from over the years. Walter has reimagined some of these images as mixed-media pieces, two of which we feature here.

The first is his portrait of Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier in 2003, taken at Frazier’s gym in Philadelphia. The legendary pugilists had been reunited for the first time in 30 years for this Sports Illustrated photo shoot. Two weeks ago, Iooss added inks to the print, working from his studio in Montauk. The second work is a 28 x 36 collage called “Golfland”—consisting of photos, tape, and ink on board—that he made of golf luminaries from 1962 to 2000, with Tiger Woods as the centerpiece. He made two of these collages, actually. Tiger has the other one. “Tiger was, and still is, the king of golf,” says Iooss.
