The King of Pop, as photographed by Matthew Rolston on September 24, 2007, at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, New York, for Ebony magazine.
Ebony magazine commissioned Matthew Rolston to photograph Michael Jackson in September of 2007 for its December issue, which marked the 25 anniversary of the album Thriller. In a few hours, Dateline will be interviewing Rolston—who also has photographed Janet Jackson many times—as part of a tribute to the late pop icon that will air tonight at 10 on NBC.
In the coming days, you will also be seeing never-before-published photographs of Jackson shot exclusively for the singer by Timothy White. We asked Timothy about his experience working with Jackson:
“I remember the anticipation very clearly. Shooting Michael was a big deal. He was special. I felt special. We talked about art and photography. I remember feeling sad for him somehow. He seemed so fragile. I just wanted to give him a big long hug, and say it was all all right. I felt he needed it.” —Timothy
