While photographers feverishly discuss the pros and cons of shooting motion work with digital SLRs, at least one TV network has leaped into the fray in a very bold way. The season finale of the hit FOX series House—which aired this past Monday—was shot using, of all things, the Canon 5D Mark II.

Greg Yaitanes, the director of the show, discussed the decision to use the Mark II via Twitter, a “conversation” that the blog Peta Pixel later excerpted in a post on the episode. Among the exchanges…
.
@MVRamunno: What is the difference in how it looks on a TV screen compared to a regular camera?
Greg Yaitanes: richer. shallow focus pulls the actors faces to forground [sic]
@oamad0101: How many frames per second and why a Canon 5D Mark II?
GY: 24p and wanted it for ease of use in tight spaces.
@Drdiagnostic: How was the quality as compared 2 the traditional camera used in shooting?
GY: i loved it and feel it’s the future.

Vincent Laforet—whose name has practically become synonymous with the Mark II and with the concept of expanding from photography into motion (here’s a behind-the-scenes look at a film he shot with the Mark II)—analyzed the Mark II’s performance in the House finale at his blog. His conclusion: the show looked “stunning.”
“…This season finale would probably have looked good on any camera out there – it just so happens that Gale [House director of photography Gale Tatersall] proved that when you give the Canon 5D MKII good material – it can play with many of the big boys out there.”
