Jim Fiscus recently photographed British chef Heston Blumenthal, producing portraits that capture the mystery and intrigue of this acclaimed molecular gastronomist. Blumenthal first rose to fame as the founder of the Fat Duck, a restaurant that boasts three Michelin stars and whose imaginative, ever-changing offerings have included the “BFG,” described as Kirsch ice cream “and the smell of the Black Forest” and something called “Sound of the Sea.” Earlier this year, he opened a new restaurant, Dinner, at the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park in London.

Jim was commissioned by London’s Channel4 for a campaign promoting the TV show Heston’s Mission Impossible, in which Blumenthal uses “his maverick culinary genius to tackle the unique dilemmas that the NHS, Cineworld Cinemas, British Airways and the Royal Navy face in their kitchens.” At Cineworld, for instance, Blumenthal undertakes a “multisensory experience of food inspired by the movies,” according to Channel4’s website. “But when his pungent fish dish and ‘edible sperm shake’ prove hard to swallow, it looks like the chef might not get his happy ending.” Oh, that British humor…
