The ADC Awards gala is coming soon—May 10th in Manhattan, to be precise. (Details here.) And to promote the event, the ADC has posted interviews with some of the jurors, including Michael Beirut, who served as chair in the Design category, and Kathy Ryan, director for photography for The New York Times Magazine, who was the Photography chair. Here’s an excerpt from the ADC’s interview with her about “her view on photography today”:
.
ADC: You have commissioned legends, from Massimo Vitali, whose work is so precise but has a duality of anonymity, to Nadav Kander, whose work evokes a feeling of transformation. How did you know that all these photographers could be enlisted to tell NY Times\’ story?
KATHY: Photographers working for The New York Times Magazine need to be able to go into a personal bubble of creativity and at the same time live in the real world enough to remain on point with an assignment. They need to remain unfettered so their ideas and personal obsessions flow freely, but also to be able to come in for a landing long enough to fulfill the precise and journalistically focused needs of a weekly publication such as The New York Times Magazine.
