Which magazines do designers love?
Grids, the Society of Publication Designers blog, has just launched a recurring feature that invites designers to talk about a magazine that they love. And if the first entry—in which Bloomberg Businessweek creative director Richard Turley sings the praises of music mag ‘Sup—is any indication, the Favorite Magazines Project will be worth following.
“From an art point of view, the magazine is really about photography,” Turley explains, “which pushes you all over the place from crunchy black and white, color-saturated portraits, contingent still lives; it feels temporary, accidental, never forced, always fun.”
It’s always informative to hear how creatives experience photography, as well as to know which publications they’re looking at. But it’s not easy to find that information online and in their own words. Favorite Magazines Project—part of SPD’s PUB 47 Competition and Awards—won’t always be photocentric, of course, but it’s a good resource. And because it’s updated every Monday, you have one less reason to feel sad about the beginning of the week.
