Matthew Rolston and SLS Hotels debut Kubrick-inspired short film “Group Hug”

Photographer and director Matthew Rolston this month premiered Group Hug, a short film he created for award-winning luxury hotel brand SLS Hotels.

Shot on location at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills—whose rooms and suites were designed by Philippe StarckGroup Hug is Matthew’s sexy homage to the record-store pickup scene in Stanley Kubrick‘s classic film A Clockwork Orange.

“SLS Hotels, and in particular the Bazaar restaurant and lounge by José Andrés, are like a fantasy playland for adults,” notes Matthew. “I find Starck’s design for SLS to be cheeky, sexy, and highly entertaining. I wanted to capture that tone in a way that is naughty and sophisticated, and to convey an almost childlike sense of play, which is something undeniably unique to the SLS brand.”

Group Hug takes the audience through a sensual and sometimes hilarious romp, re-creating the infamous pickup scene from A Clockwork Orange, in which an encounter in a record store between a handsome young man and two beautiful young women quickly escalates into an outrageously comedic take on group sex. Matthew begins his film in the Bazaar, before moving the action upstairs to one of the SLS Hotel guest suites.

Group Hug made its broadcast premiere this month on Extra TV, which interviewed Matthew about the film. Watch the interview here, or click on the screenshot below…

“SLS Hotels evokes a sense of dreamlike luxury for its guests, and I wanted viewers to feel as though they’ve escaped to that visually seductive world in the film,” explains Matthew. “Whether you’re at SLS in Beverly Hills or South Beach, these highly evocative properties are filled with attractive, hyper-stylish people unafraid to express themselves as they celebrate life… And Group Hug is my medium for showcasing that energy .”

This is not the first time Matthew has collaborated with the taste-making hotel brand. He served as creative director of the Redbury @ Hollywood and Vine, working hand-in-hand with sbe founder, chairman, and CEO Sam Nazarian to develop the new hotel brand’s acclaimed boho-chic aesthetic. He also recently channeled his decades of directing photo, music video, and film shoots by re-mastering the lighting program throughout all guest rooms and suites at SLS Hotel Beverly Hills in order to showcase the guests themselves in the most beautiful and flattering light.

Group Hug is yet another example of why we love collaborating with Matthew,” says Arash Azarbarzin, president of sbe’s Hotel Group. “He views our brands through a wildly creative lens, and the results are always powerfully stimulating.”.
