Rosie O’Donnell on why coming out was easy, and more revelations from Timothy Greenfield-Sanders’ upcoming documentary “The Boomer List”

Timothy Greenfield-Sanders‘ new documentary, The Boomer List—which features intimate interviews by Timothy with 19 notable baby boomers—doesn’t premiere as part of PBS“American Masters” series until September 23, but the buzz has already begun thanks to the press screenings.

The New York Post, for instance, did a Page Six story noting that Rosie Donnell‘s coming out was relatively easy because of her circumstances. “When your mother dies when you are 10 years old, everything else is a speed bump,” she tells Timothy in the film.

The newspaper also notes that Samuel L. Jackson said he wanted to be “the black Jacques Cousteau when he grew up, but his mother refused to allow him to study oceanography at the University of Southern California, and insisted he go to Morehouse College in Atlanta, where he met black activists Stokely Carmichael and H. Rap Brown. Jackson said a production of The Threepenny Opera, with its gangsters and scantily clad prostitutes, steered him toward acting.”

“When I learned about this year’s boomer milestone, I came up with the idea for The Boomer List,” explains Timothy. “The film captures the boomer generation’s dynamic spirit through 19 distinct ‘American Masters’ who had a profound effect on our world.”

Three days after The Boomer List makes its broadcast debut on PBS, the Newseum in Washington, DC, will present “The Boomer List: Photographs by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders.” The exhibition comprises 19 large-format portraits of influential baby boomers, one born each year of the baby boom, from 1946 to 1964. The exhibit, created in partnership with AARP, will be on display at the Newseum through July 5, 2015.

A companion coffee-table book, published by Luxury Press, and a DVD from Perfect Day Films will be available Oct. 1. The Boomer List is sponsored by AARP and is part of its yearlong program Boomers@50+, which celebrates this influential generation.
