In “The Next Green Revolution,” National Geographic examines the steps scientists are taking to try to prevent climate change and population growth from endangering the world’s food supply. The magazine commissioned Craig Cutler to create photographs to illustrate the story, a project he shot both in his New York City studio and in the Philippines, Kansas, and Washington, DC.
Craig worked with Kurt Mutchler, senior photo editor for science at the magazine. Kurt writes about their collaboration, and shares Craig’s sketches from the project, at National Geographic’s photography blog, Proof.
“What separates Craig from all the other photographers that I work with is his use of hand-drawn sketches,” Kurt writes.

“I virtually do a photo shoot in my head through my sketches,” Craig tells Kurt. “It took me a while to realize how much they are a benefit to me to explain to my clients what I’m thinking. So in the last four or five years, I have gone full circle and share my sketches with my clients. It began with the IBM Smart campaign that I worked on. They asked me to come up with ideas. So I started doing hundreds and hundreds of sketches for them. Now I do it all the time.”
