For years, Timothy Greenfield-Sanders has been exploring the nature of identity through his award-winning “List” portrait series and documentaries, beginning with “The Black List” in 2008 all the way through his upcoming project “The Trans List.” And now viewers will have the opportunity to consider these bodies of work alongside each other in “IDENTITY: Timothy Greenfield-Sanders The List Portraits,” opening September 24 at the Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles.

“Conceived to illuminate the breakthroughs of marginalized communities, ‘IDENTITY: Timothy Greenfield-Sanders The List Portraits’ comprises 151 uniquely compelling large-format photographs of pioneers in five distinct-but-often-overlapping groups,” explains the museum. “Each installment (“The Black List,” “The Latino List,” “The Women’s List,” “The Out List,” and “The Trans List”) calls attention to cultural progress as exemplified by the stories of its subjects, people who have overcome obstacles to achieve success in disparate walks of life. This is the first time the full series can be seen in its entirety.”

The exhibition also marks the world premiere of Timothy’s “Trans List” portraits, which features prominent transgender individuals including Caitlyn Jenner, Laverne Cox, and Janet Mock. The accompanying documentary will debut December 5 as an HBO Documentary Film.

“It’s one thing to read and talk about the role of race and sexuality and gender identity in our lives,” Cinny Kennard, executive director of the Annenberg Foundation, told the Los Angeles Times. “It’s another thing to turn a powerful, piercing camera lens on people of all races and sexual orientations and identities to get a window into our minds, souls [and] what defines us and divides us and unites us.

“Timothy Greenfield-Sanders is one of the most gifted portrait photographers working today. With these terrific portraits, he teaches us more about identity and self-realization, about how people see themselves and how they strive to be seen, than we can capture in many thousands of words.” (Read the full article here or by clicking on the screenshot below.)
