Tom recently did an editorial shoot with professional beach-volleyball players Misty May, Angie Akers, and Tyra Turner that inspired him to collaborate with them on a personal project. “I was intrigued by the combination of strength, grace, and beauty that these women possess,” he explains. “Physically, they are warriors, but in between spikes and digs, they are feminine and absolute sweethearts.
“I wanted to capture them in their element,” he continues, “so I met them in Manhattan Beach for one of their practices. We did a few set shots, and then I just shot their practice. These women work HARD and earn every bit of their physiques. The weather was quite gray, even misting, but it made for a clean, almost studio-like backdrop. I had them wear some of their brightly colored suits to give the shots a pop of color.”
