A new exhibition opening tonight at Hasted Kraeutler in New York City gives gallerists a chance to enjoy a bit of limelight while raising money for a good cause. All of the work on view in “Don’t Quit Your Day Job” was created by gallery owners, among them Brian Clamp of ClampArt, Peter MacGill of Pace/MacGill, Robert Mann, and Steven Kasher. Most of the photographs in the show are for sale, and proceeds will be donated to the Lotus House women’s shelter in Miami.
Here’s the official release:
.
HASTED KRAEUTLER is pleased to announce DON’T QUIT YOUR DAY JOB, photographs by gallery owners. The exhibition is a lighthearted indulgence in the fantasy of “what might have been” for these lovers of photography had they not decided to pursue their day jobs.
DON’T QUIT YOUR DAY JOB is equally a celebration of the gallery owners’ careers and contributions to contemporary art and photography, highlighting the origins in creating photography and art that led them to own galleries in the first place. While no one story is true of all the participants in this exhibition, many of them have practiced photography before and during their current careers as gallerists, while others moved from creating to representing photography, commercially, many years ago (and hardly ever looked back). In all cases, however, HASTED KRAEUTLER is honored to host the work of its colleagues in the business.
The artists are DEBORAH BELL, KIM BOURUS, BRIAN CLAMP, DAVID FAHEY, ZACH FEUER, MICHAEL FOLEY, JEFFREY FRAENKEL, JESSICA FREDERICKS, SARAH HASTED, STEVEN KASHER, ALAN KLOTZ, JOSEPH KRAEUTLER, PETER MACGILL, LAURENCE MILLER, ROBERT MANN, JANET RUSSEK, JACK SHAINMAN, ROSE SHOSHANA and SASHA WOLF.
While some of the photographs are on loan for exhibition only, most are for sale. The proceeds will be donated to Lotus House Women’s Shelter, a quiet enclave in the heart of one of Miami’s poorest neighborhoods.
.
The reception for “Don’t Quit Your Day Job” is tonight from 5 to 8 at Hasted Kraeutler, 537 W. 24th St., between 10th and 11th avenues, and the show will be on view through August 19.
And tomorrow at the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art in Staten Island, just a lovely ferry ride away from Manhattan, is a reception for “Vir Fidelis,” a solo show by Paul Moakley, deputy photo editor at Time magazine.

The official description:
.
Paul Moakley has created an in-depth chronicle of an all-boys catholic High School captured through large-format photographs and short films. The artist is a seasoned documentary photographer who recently began exploring time-based installation projects. Following the visual language of his photographic work, Moakley’s auteur video projects are shot in a photographically composed style that incisively question prescribed gender roles, identity formation, and group mentality in teen-aged boys.
.
The reception for “Vir Fidelis” is from 6 to 10 p.m. tomorrow, and the show will be on display till October 23 at Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden, 1000 Richmond Terrace, Bldg C: The Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art.
