Emerging talent is the theme of this month’s cover story in the British Journal of Photography, and we’re thrilled to report that Erik Madigan Heck is one of the featured photographers. In fact, Erik, who is based in New York, is one of only two U.S. photographers to be chosen for the 30-plus-page story, which spotlights artists from around the globe, including Sweden, China, Benin, and the U.K.
In its writeup on Erik, the BJP notes that much his work is linked with fashion but that Erik doesn’t actually consider himself a fashion photographer. “My work has never really been about the fashion,” he tells the magazine. “It’s always been about the subject itself: color, form, light, women, men—any and all of the above. But fashion enabled me to do this with a purpose, beyond just doing it for myself or for the sake of art.”
Accompanying the piece are three photos by Erik, which the magazine explains were inspired by “Mary Katrantzou’s clothes and Jean-Édouard Vuillard’s paintings,” though Erik stops short of explaining how he shot them. “That’s a secret,” he tells the BJP. “But it’s not all digital manipulation like people think.”
