Salma Hayek photographed in Elizabethan makeup and attire, from a 1999 series by Matthew Rolston.

With the holidays upon us, The New York Times has been highlighting books of note that would be a pleasure to give or receive. This past weekend, the newspaper’s Book Review featured The New York Times Magazine Photographs, edited by director of photography Kathy Ryan. The hefty 447-page tome collects “three decades of virtuosic images, organized around themes like portraiture, documentary, photo-illustration and style,” notes the Book Review.
To accompany the article, the Review’s editors selected the above portrait of Salma Hayek by Matthew Rolston. The caption: “Salma Hayek as an Elizabethan beauty, in a costume designed by Alexandra Byrne for the film Elizabeth, was part of a 1999 series by Matthew Rolston illustrating fashion throughout history.”
“I’m thrilled to have my image selected,” Matthew told me in an email, “considering the quality of photography and scope of the book.”

Incidentally, Matthew’s Salma Hayek portrait appeared in another book of note: his monograph beautyLight, published by teNeues. The cover features a second portrait he made of the actress, this time from a slightly freer era…
