Time magazine names Nadav Kander’s Paul McCartney/Rolling Stone cover one of 2012’s best

Time magazine has weighed in on the magazine covers of 2012, and among the top 10 is Nadav Kander‘s portrait of Paul McCartney for the March 1 issue of Rolling Stone.

“A great cover is always a collaborative effort,” notes Kira Pollack, Time‘s director of photography, in the introduction to “TIME Picks the Top Photographic Magazine Covers of 2012,” adding that Time spoke to “a mix of editors, photo directors, art directors and photographers who took part during different stages of the creative process” in order to caption the images.

“It’s not easy to shoot Paul McCartney mostly because he’s been in front of the camera for 50 years, and often the photographs of him come off as contrived, even corny,” Jodi Peckman, Rolling Stone‘s director of photography, told Time. “I really think it captures McCartney’s personality in a simple kind of way. There’s no pointing at the camera or flashing of the peace sign—the kind of thing you often seen in pictures of him. It’s just Paul McCartney being whimsical and playful.”

Whimsical and playful—and unforgettable. “When Paul picked up his guitar and sang to me, making up words about me as he sang along,” Nadav told Time, “that was a pretty special memorable moment.”
