For its Visionaries 2013 issue, which celebrates “8 Remarkable Global Citizens,” Conde Nast Traveler commissioned Guzman to photograph the president of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto.
“With boyish good looks and well-cut dark suits, Enrique Peña Nieto projects an aura of unflappable, almost Clark Kent–like resolve,” notes the magazine. “But on a recent morning in Chapultepec Park, near the presidential palace, just for a moment he turns misty-eyed. The charismatic 47-year-old president of Mexico—who in his first year in office has launched daring economic and social reforms, taking on the corrupt vested interests of the old guard—is talking about his children’s future: ‘I hope for my children, and for all Mexicans, that they can be proud to be Mexican, proud of their heritage, and proud that they have a peaceful, inclusive, vibrant country that is playing a role in the world.’”
Guzman—also known as Connie Hansen and Russell Peacock—flew to Mexico City for the assignment, shooting the portrait below at Chapultepec Park.
