For his feature “California and Bust” in the November issue of Vanity Fair, Michael Lewis conducted his interview about the state’s economic struggles with former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger while the two of them went on a three-hour bike ride.  At the beginning of their tour of Santa Monica and Venice they stopped along the bike path just north of where Schwarzenegger began his bodybuilding career in the 1970s as an Austrian immigrant with economic woes of his own. This was the setting that Art Streiber chose for the portrait that accompanies Lewis’s article. Art collaborated with photo editor Ron Beinner on the story, which included portraits of the mayor of San Jose and the city manager and fire chief of Vallejo.
