Art Streiber’s Ryan Gosling and Steve Martin cover stories hit New York and L.A. simultaneously

If you were flying between the two coasts last week, as Bill was, then you probably picked up the new issue of New York when you departed here (as Bill did) and, upon landing in L.A., purchased the new issue of Los Angeles magazine, which Bill immediately snapped up because he loved the cover portrait.

And if you did all of those things, then you, like Bill, found yourself enjoying two cover stories shot by Art Streiber—Ryan Gosling for New York and Steve Martin for Los Angeles—which, in a neat bit of synchronicity, were on newsstands in their respective cities at the very same time. Notes Bill, “Art’s covers bookended my trip!”

Here, Art gives us a glimpse behind the scenes of both shoots…

“Finding a way to say ‘Los Angeles’ that hasn’t been done before is…impossible,” says Art. “So we embraced the obvious: sunglasses and palm trees. And even though the cover concept was constrained by a few limitations (tight headshot, sunglasses), Steve gave us an incredible variety of looks.

We then spent some time working with a manual typewriter and a can of black paint to round out the idea of the ‘frustrated writer,’ and Steve continued to be a truly professional performer. Every frame is publishable.”

“Ryan Gosling came to play. When he arrived, we discussed the three ideas that the magazine and I had come up with. But as we walked around the studio, Ryan became inspired by everything he encountered…from mini-dirtbikes to Christmas lights. By the time we were done brainstorming, our concept list had quadrupled.

For the Molotov-cocktail shot, Ryan asked if we had an oversized printer at the studio so that we could do portraits of him and blow them up to poster size so that he could throw the Molotov cocktail at pictures of himself. His creative capacity and input were unstoppable, but sadly, there wasn’t a printer on site.

We ended up in the driveway/alley next to the studio, with a bottle of Stoli filled with strawberry liqueur—which, upon impact after Ryan hurled it through the air, produced a small, containable firebomb.”
