Yesterday Arem Duplessis, the design director of The New York Times Magazine, tweeted a sneak peek of this Sunday’s cover: a re-creation of a famous 1980 shot of John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg, with comedian Andy Samberg playing both men and photographed by Walter Iooss. Well, that image is now live on the Times‘ site, plus ones of Samberg as Jimmy Connors, Andre Agassi, and Pete Sampras. The photos, which illustrate Gerald Marzorati‘s story “The Fierce Intimacies of Tennis Rivalries,” are both hilarious and uncanny. Click on the image below to view the slideshow at nytimes.com.

“Of all the shots we did today, the one that was the most important was going to be the cover of Borg and McEnroe where Andy would play both people in one shot,” Walter explains in a New York Times video on the making of the shoot. “When he showed up on the set as McEnroe, I mean, it was like having John show up. Then when we finished the McEnroe pictures, we dressed Andy as Borg, and he shows up…and it’s, my God, he’s now Bjorn Borg.

“You look at the cover,” Walter goes on to say, “and it looks like 1980, but it’s 2011, and it looks like Borg and McEnroe, but it’s Andy and Andy. Phenomenal.”
