You gotta love a portrait subject who’s up for anything. For a Wired U.K. cover story on DNA hacking, biotech expert Andrew Hessel and crime futurist Marc Goodman each pulled on a bright-yellow biohazard suit and gamely posed for Art Streiber. “It was tricky keeping our subjects breathing in sealed biohazard suits, without the benefit of oxygen tanks,” says Art, adding that Hessel and Goodman were “fantastic.”
The shoot took place in an un-permitted industrial San Francisco location, with city police officers lending a hand with traffic control and even loaning Art and his crew a patrol car as a prop. “Photographing Andrew and Marc—while coordinating a real SFPD squad car and managing a guerrilla location—was challenging and thrilling,” says Art.
“Working with the folks at Wired U.K. is always a good time because they really push me to think about each setup beyond where I initially land with the concept,” he adds. “In this case, that meant turning the police tape into the space for the headline for the story, which turned out spectacularly.”
