Tobias Hutzler photographs the cover of Road & Track’s July issue using only the moon as his light source

For the cover of its July issue, Road & Track sent Tobias Hutzler to California to photograph a story on high-performance cars, with the focus being the muscular new Camaro Z/28. The shoot took place in various locations in and around Palm Springs, including on a racetrack.

Tobias worked with design director Dave Speranza, and it truly turned out to be an ideal matchup of photographer, concept, and creative director. He and Speranza agreed that the cover photo and the opener would be shot using only moonlight as a light source, a concept that Tobias had explored extensively in personal projects (including this one).

“Dave Speranza wanted to do something new, to create a different perspective,” Tobias explains. “We did group shots of the cars, arranging them in total darkness. We shot onto the racetrack from cranes. We did motion shots, shooting from inside one car to another. Dave is a visionary design director—no exaggeration.”

Here’s a look at the photos as seen in the magazine, plus a few behind-the-scenes images…
