Variety asked Art Streiber to photograph Angelina Jolie, who directed the movie Unbroken, for the cover of its Noveber 18 issue. The movie tells the harrowing but ultimately triumphant tale of Louis Zamperini, a former Olympic runner who was captured during World War II while on a search-and-rescue mission and for two years endured horrific torture. After returning to the States, Zamperini fought the demons brought on by his traumas and once again found hope, becoming an inspirational speaker.
“They say you should never meet your heroes, because they often disappoint you,” Jolie tells Variety. “But Louis really was one of the greatest people ever.”
Unbroken stars Jack O’Connell as Zamperini and Miyavi, who is an internationally known singer-songwriter, as Mutsuhiro Watanabe, the Japanese officer who ordered Zamperini’s torture. The movie hits theaters on Christmas Day. Read the Variety feature here.
