Jeff Lipsky was thrilled when Vanity Fair asked him to photograph Bob Odenkirk and David Cross for its September issue, but when he arrived at the sunny golf-course location for the shoot, he ran into an unexpected problem. Cross’ ever-present glasses were progressives that dutifully darkened in the sunlight, blocking his eyes from view.
“I was like, ‘Oh, no,'” recalls Jeff. Fortunately, Jeff also wears specs and the style is similar to Cross’, so he gave him his glasses and Jeff completed the shoot in an extra pair of prescription sunglasses that he had handy.
“David Cross really couldn’t see out of my prescription,” laughs Jeff, but they all made it work. Jeff even got a great shot of the two comic comedians where Cross is wearing his own (darkened) glasses. The magazine used it as the opener. Here’s a look…
