Walter Iooss to receive the prestigious FOTOmentor Award this month at FOTOfusion

We are proud to announce that Walter Iooss will be recognized for his extraordinary contribution to sports photography at this year’s FOTOfusion Awards in West Palm Beach this month, where he will be presented with the FOTOmentor Award. Walter will be in excellent company: Past recipients include Sebastiao Salgado, Elliott Erwitt, Gordon Parks, James Nachtwey, and John Loengard.

Walter was just 17 when he embarked on his photography career with his first assignment for Sports Illustrated. He has since shot more than 300 Sports Illustrated covers (his first at the age of 19), contributed to the magazine’s Swimsuit Issue for 30-plus years, and published 13 books, including The New York Times #1 bestseller Rare Air: Michael on Michael in 1993 and Heaven in 2010. And he has shot campaigns for clients ranging from Coca-Cola, Adidas, Nike, Oakley, Canon, and Gatorade to the National Milk Council, Kellogg’s, and the Esquire Network.

“Photography is not a job. It’s a way of life,” says Walter. “I live it, think it, and feel it. It’s just in my DNA.”

In addition to bestowing the FOTOmentor Award, FOTOfusion is mounting an exhibition of Walter’s work—curated by Scott McKiernan, CEO/Founder of ZUMA Press—at the Palm Beach Photographic Centre. The opening reception is from 6 to 8 p.m. on January 21, and the show will be on view through March 26. Details here.
