Spotlight: Jim Fiscus

Jim Fiscus.

Jim Fiscus is a visual storyteller who builds his narratives using conceptual photography, computer-generated wizardry, and his unusually vivid imagination. “Fiscus’s photographs are cinematic in nature and quality,” Communication Arts noted in a 2009 feature on Jim.

His portfolio is wildly diverse, ranging from a Renaissance Hotels campaign that re-creates The Birth of Venus to a series of gritty Levi’s ads. And his personal work is just plain wild. The Unfortunate Moment of Misunderstanding, a “digital novella” that Jim produced from scratch, tells the story of an obsessive wood carver who makes life-size dolls of the same woman over and over again.

“Lots of things influence my ideas,” he says, “like too much science fiction, music, daydreaming while traveling, time on my motorcycle.”

You might also notice a tendency toward big personalities in Jim’s work. This soft-spoken Texas native has an uncanny ability to internalize larger-than-life characters, whether they’re fictional (as with his award-winning work for the Showtime series Dexter) or very much alive—Jim once shot a portrait of hot-tempered chef Gordon Ramsay in a tub of caviar for Britain’s Channel 4.

“When I’m on a call with an art director, I talk with them about how I can create a look that represents them and their client. And they know from my book that there are any number of directions we can travel,” he says. “Choices.”

Then he adds, “The photo has to illustrate the concept, obviously, but the look of that photo is what determines the emotional response.”
