Last week, LIFE.com announced the winners of its inaugural Photo Blog Awards, “the Web’s 20 most compelling, most consistently insightful and surprising photography blogs. ” The honorees, which were chosen from nearly 300 popular blogs, “deliver a thrilling, clear-eyed picture of the state of photography and photojournalism today,” as LIFE.com notes.
Curious about why LIFE.com chose to honor photo blogs and what the response has been so far, I emailed Simon Barnett, LIFE’s director of photography.
“At LIFE we’re always thinking about new ways to reach out to the professional photo community,” he replied. “One day earlier in this year, the editor, Bill Shapiro, came up with the idea of launching the Photo Blog Awards—and it seemed to make immediate sense. I think it’s probably true that serious professionals are now getting much of their news and formulating many of their opinions through the top blogs. These bloggers are the new champions of our industry, an industry that is going through a myriad of challenges and transitions—good, scary and unfathomable—like never before.
“The response has been very rewarding,” he continued, “not only from inside the community—which we kind of expected—but from our wider audience, who are getting exposed to the finer points of what goes into making photographs that matter.”
Thanks, Simon!
