Matthias Clamer on his 16-minute shoot with “The Book of Mormon” cast

People magazine recently commissioned Matthias Clamer to photograph the cast of The Book of Mormon with Trey Parker and Matt Stone, who cowrote and scored the Tony-winning Broadway musical. (The two also masterminded the long-running Comedy Central hit South Park.) He got the shots you see here in 16 minutes.

People was very proud to be the only publication to get Matt and Trey and the entire cast,” Matthias explains. “We were to have 45 minutes in the theater, but it ended up being 16 minutes. I asked if I could rent a tourist bus and shoot them outside the theater. It was only two days before the shoot, but I used an incredible locations manager with good connections to pull the permit off.

“The PR for the show rejected the idea,” Matthias continues, “but the editor in chief liked it so much he called [Book of Mormon coproducer] Scott Rudin, who also liked it so much that he said it has to happen this way. Scott Rudin himself showed up to the shoot.

“We parked the bus in the middle of the street at rush hour, and two cops we hired directed traffic. We had lights rigged on the bus, on the sidewalk, and on the fire escape of the theater. I worked with five assistants to make it seamless and use my 16 minutes well.”
