Presenting selections from an exuberant new series by photographer Melanie Acevedo, shot last month at Dune Studios in New York City. The project is a bit of a departure for Melanie, who is known for her interiors and environmental portraits and who wanted to step outside her photographic comfort zone.
“I wanted to do what I do in environment in the studio,” she says. “I was really inspired by the older work of David Bailey and the portraiture of Richard Avedon and Philippe Halsman.
“It was a great experience to shoot all these different kinds of people,” she continues. “And I’m going to continue doing this sort of work. This is the beginning of a new journey for me.”
Among the many models appearing in these photos are Costanza Theodoli-Braschi, a creative director and illustrator, and her aunt, Jill Spalding, who was for years an editor at Vogue and worked with David Bailey on numerous occasions (“Jill is not young or old—she transcends age and is her wonderful self,” notes Melanie. “That’s the kind of thing I’m interested in exploring more of”); Kwesi Blair, VP of business development at retail consultant Robert Burke Associates, and Les Robinson, formerly of Ralph Lauren. Judging by their enthusiastic feedback on the shoot, a good time was had by all.
“It was a great shoot, and Melanie is a FANTASTIC photographer,” raves Kwesi. “Her energy and positivity are so apparent in every shot.”
“I had an absolute ball shooting with Melanie,” says Les. “It is easy to understand why she is at the top of her field: She’s an absolute professional. I am not a model, but I have done a shoot here and there, and no one I have ever worked with has been so warm and human with a camera in their hand as Melanie was. A wonderful woman!”
