Filter magazine recently commissioned Michael Muller to photograph Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke for their March cover story on Yorke’s new project, Atoms for Peace, who are releasing their debut album, Amok. Michael flew to London to photograph Yorke and artist Stanley Donwood, the man behind Radiohead’s visual style (he created the artwork for The Bends, for example), at the club Paradise by Way of Kensal Green.

A longtime celebrity shooter, Michael is no stranger to photographing the talented and the famous, but he was especially excited about this shoot because he’s not just a Radiohead fan, he says, but “a FANatic.”

“I had never photographed him before, but he’s been on my bucket list for years and I told Filter that five years ago. We’ve been trying to make it happen ever since. The hard thing is that Thom does so few shoots,” says Michael.

In an hour and 15 minutes, he deftly guided Yorke and Donwood through 12 setups and ultimately captured something like 2,000 images. He was even able to persuade them to step outside for a stroll.

“I was like a kid in a candy shop,” says Michael. “London has the most amazing backdrops, and the fact that we only had to walk a block each direction and had such a variety of scenes just made the shoot that much more magical. Long live rock & roll, and what would music be without Radiohead and Mr. Yorke!!!”

Here’s a look at some of the photos appearing in the new issue of Filter. Read highlights from the interview at filtermagazine.com.
