Michael Muller’s incredible shark photography has been exhibited in galleries, featured on television, and praised in print. It has even inspired a clothing line. And now it’s taking over Instagram. The Discovery Channel will be featuring Michael’s shark photos all this week at its Instagram account (@Discovery) as part of Shark Week 2014, which kicked off yesterday. Michael (@michaelmuller7) will also be posting real-time photo updates from Mexico, where he is currently photographing whale sharks.
Last Sunday, The New York Times Magazine showcased one of Michael’s shark photographs, which will be the subject of a new monograph to be published next year by Taschen. And there’s an excellent interview with Michael on the Instagram blog in which he talks about the waterproof strobe lights he designed to create his striking underwater imagery, as well as the filters he uses—including his own custom MullerPhoto—when he posts his shark photos to Instagram.
“It’s all about waiting for that right ‘moment’ to hit the trigger, which comes from 28 years’ experience,” Michael explains in Instagram’s “How I Shoot” interview. “If you get too excited and go too fast, then you miss that moment. If you wait too long, you watch it happen and have the shot in your head, but no one else ever gets to witness it. So timing is everything.”

The New York Times Magazine published this image by Michael Muller in “Staking Out the Great White Shark.”
