For a feature on New Jersey governor Chris Christie, The New York Times Magazine sent Tobias Hutzler to photograph the politician, whose blunt outspokenness has earned him a larger-than-life reputation, as he campaigned in New Jersey and Iowa for fellow Republican candidates ahead of the midterm elections.
“The assignment was to show politics from a different angle, to pull back the curtains and reveal how political events are choreographed and staged by marketing and PR teams,” explains Tobias, who worked with director of photography Kathy Ryan and photo editor Amy Kellner.
“We built a custom setup in order to achieve this perspective—an aerial view above the event, hovering with the camera above Chris Christie throughout several days and states.”
