“The shoot with Placido Domingo for Vanity Fair Spain was a bit of a production minefield; budget constraints, timing constraints, and union constraints combined for a hectic afternoon with El Maestro, who is not only one of the world’s greatest tenors, but also the general director of the LA Opera.
We arrived at LA’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion at 9 a.m. for a 12:30 shoot and were scheduled to have Señor Domingo for two hours.
We scouted the stage, the wings, the lobby, and the basement of the concert hall and settled on six locations, one of which we’d use to put up a gray seamless for the cover.
It was important for the crew and me to put together a game plan that made sense both geographically and from a timing perspective in order to maximize our limited time with Sr. Domingo.
We started on stage and in the wings, then headed downstairs to do a portrait in the hair & makeup room and another walking the halls. Then we went upstairs to shoot a few options on the seamless, and finally, near the end of the day, we took Sr. Domingo outside, in front of the Dorothy Chandler, to shoot our last portrait.
El Maestro couldn’t have been more gracious and easygoing, which I really believe comes through in the imagery.” —Art Streiber
