TV’s perhaps unlikeliest pairing, gangsta-rap pionner Snoop Dogg and impeccable lifestyle maven Martha Stewart, are hosting their own show on VH1 called Snoop & Martha’s Potluck Dinner Party, so The New York Times invited them to a chic West Hollywood restaurant for an interview. The accompanying portraits for the story—titled, hilariously enough, “What Would You Serve With Gin and Juice?”—were shot by Brinson+Banks.
“There are two stories from this shoot,” says Kendrick Brinson. “The first is I got to spend a dinner photographing this amazing and successful and unlikely duo as they shared stories about their new show together. They were fun and friendly and had so much more chemistry than I imagined. This was, oddly enough, my third shoot with Snoop, but he didn’t call me ‘Strawberry Shortcake’ this time.
“The other story is, we were in the corner of the back kitchen of the restaurant, in the only room where photography is allowed, and I wedged myself on the floor on my knees between a shelf and Snoop, trying to avoid taking photos of the reporter, who was a couple of inches to my right, as he interviewed these two while they all ate. I could only shoot them with flash because it was really dark, all of which is a matter of problem-solving—like any shoot, though maybe a little more pressure—when bam! I got a migraine. I kept on working, naturally, and waited till I got home to curl up in a ball and ride the waves of nausea and insane pain. Luckily, that was my first migraine while at a shoot—and hopefully my last!”
