Matthias Clamer photographs Nicki Minaj with Kobe Bryant, Eminem with Calvin Johnson, Kendrick Lamar with Chris Paul, and more for ESPN The Magazine’s 2014 Music Issue

Last year, for its first-ever Music Issue, ESPN The Magazine asked Matthias Clamer to re-create famous album covers using sports stars in place of the musicians. And it was a big hit. So this year, with the bar set high, the magazine once again turned to Matthias.

The theme for the 2014 Music Issue is the convergence of the worlds of music and sports, so Matthias photographed seven dynamic pairings: Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers with pop star Nicki Minaj; Calvin Johnson of the Detroit Lions with rapper Eminem; rapper Kendrick Lamar with Chris Paul of the Los Angeles Clippers; U.S. Women’s Soccer star Hope Solo with singer-songwriter Skylar Grey; Dustin Penner of hockey team the Anaheim Ducks with the indie band Capital Cities; Cam Jordan and Kenny Stills of the New Orleans Saints with Trombone Shorty and the Grambling State marching band; and baseball players Manny Machado (Baltimore Orioles) and Yonder Alonso (San Diego Padres) with reggaeton star Yandel.

The Music Issue, which hit newsstands last Friday, features three different covers and an online complement with behind-the-scenes videos, interviews, and more. Below, some highlights, plus a couple of behind-the-scenes images. View the complete package at espn.com/musicissue and the gallery here.

For the December issue of the German edition of Men’s Health, Jan Steinhilber photographed a series of watch still lifes, with setups ranging from stacked Matchbox cars to a pile of miniature plastic skeletons to a tableaux of lime-green toy trashcans spilling out slime. The February issue of PDN includes an interview with Jorg Badura about his mobile setup, with an emphasis on his portraits of the hardy stand-up paddleboarders who’ve completed the SEAPaddle NYC. “Dan Havlik, PDN‘s senior technology editor, gives a great idea of how we solved challenges, adapted, and got very real, intimate, yet athletic post-race photo portraits,” says Jorg.

Schwab commissions Doug Menuez for corporate image library

Charles Schwab brokerage and banking company recently commissioned Doug Menuez to capture the life and values of typical Schwab customers, in all their many varieties, as well as to photograph inside the corporate offices.

Doug approached the brief two ways: He created authentic-feeling moments with models in controlled environments, and he went out into the streets to photograph the models as they blended into scenes of everyday life. Below, some of the many highlights from the image library he produced for Schwab…

Nadav Kander for Baylor College of Medicine

For this recent campaign for Baylor College of Medicine, the concept was to use hands as a poetic metaphor for the tools employed in “giving life to possible,” as the tagline says. Olson, the ad agency on the account, commissioned Nadav Kander to photograph the hands of doctors, researchers, and students at Baylor for the campaign, which was featured in Lürzer’s Archive Vol. 6/2013. Here’s a look…
