From Russia with clowns: Rolph Gobits’ circus performers

Rolph has an enduring fascination with performers of all kinds, whether they’re chic models and film stars or the painted-face, leotard-wearing members of the circus, so one of his ongoing personal projects is to make portraits of showpeople. Here are some highlights from the “Entertainers” gallery at his website:

This past May and June, Rolph photographed members of both the Moscow State Circus and the Russian state circus, and he’s just sent me some of the images:

During the past two months, Rolph also photographed several famous Russian entertainers who are, shall we say, far more serious. Let’s have a look at a couple of them, for the sake of contrast—and also because it’s interesting to see how comfortably Rolph moves between capturing the eccentricities of the hardworking traveling performer and photographing the gravitas of the intellectually driven artist.
