New music photography by Matthias Clamer: the Dums, My Chemical Romance, the National, and Cee Lo

Matthias, who shot the ads for the new David Hasselhoff A&E reality show The Hoffs, has also done a lot of new music editorial photography in recent months, shooting My Chemical Romance, the National, Cee Lo, and the Dums. Let’s take a look…

“I went to his rehearsal space near Atlanta, which really had nothing to offer picturewise,” says Matthias, “so I shot on simple colorful backgrounds and let the bling do the work.”

British music mag Q commissioned Matthias to shoot the Dums, inviting him to choose any city on the band’s U.S. tour calendar as his location. “I picked Tallahassee,” says Matthias. “It has some amazing swamp locations surrounding it. I arranged for a couple of boats and picked up the lantern at an antiques shop on the way to the shoot. I stood knee deep in the swamp when I shot these angles, camera tethered into a laptop. We kind of checked for alligators before I went in.”

Matthias photographed the platinum-selling rock band My Chemical Romance in London for Q. “Q suggested doing a Blade Runner theme,” he recalls, “which of course is hugely set-extensive and expensive. So I Google-mapped-street-viewed the surrounding area of the studio we had booked to see how I could utilize existing structures. I used one of the entrances to the building, and all I needed were a few neon signs, some pipes and wires, a smoke machine, add some water—and we were in Blade Runner city.”
