There’s a big difference between documenting what happens at a place and capturing the feel of it. For an assignment for the May 14 issue of The New Yorker (above), for which he photographed New York City skateparks, Tobias Hutzler was asked to do the latter. The photo, taken at the Pier 62 skatepark at Hudson River Park, is one of many photos he produced while photographing different skateparks in Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan.

“Each of these places has a different energy and different people,” notes Tobias, who worked with director of photography Whitney Johnson and associate picture editor Jessie Wender. “Each shows a different face of New York City.”

Tobias didn’t have much time to prepare for the assignment—he was on location of a large shoot in the middle of the desert in Nevada, in fact, when he got the call from The New Yorker. “Five hours later, I was on a plane, heading back to NYC,” he recalls. “By that time, I’d been on location for several weeks, and I was extremely curious how I would perceive and see the chaos, the liveliness, and energy of Manhattan and Brooklyn and Queens after shooting for weeks in quiet landscapes and the stillness of the desert. How would that contrast and experience play out in the photographs?

His approach to the shoot was inspired in part by his interpretation of The New Yorker‘s visual style. “It’s based on illustration,” he says. ” So that was my approach: to create photographs that match the beauty of an illustration, the beauty of hand drawing. My composition was built on clean lines, clear geometric shapes, isolated subjects—all, of course, captured in camera, not relying on postproduction. When you think of a hand drawing, the lines are not perfectly straight and sterile, and that’s the beauty of it. It’s REAL.”

This assignment was far from the first time that Tobias has roamed the city in search of photographs. Below are some of his personal photos of New York that he sent along as a complement to the New Yorker photo. “These pictures of New York are not photos about a city, a place, people,” he explains. “They’re more general. They’re about life itself, the essence of being human.”
