Matthias Clamer on photographing chart-topping electronic duo Daft Punk for Q magazine exclusive cover story

Daft Punk, whose album Random Access Memories debuted in May at No. 1 on the Billboard album chart, are a pair of French electronic musicians immediately identifiable by their shiny, face-obscuring helmets. Matthias Clamer photographed them for Q magazine’s exclusive interview with the duo, and his portraits—set on “the beach”—brilliantly capture Daft Punk’s sensibility: futuristic with a sly wink.

“It was a rainy day in Paris, but we wanted them on a sunny tropical beach, doing human things like sunbathing and licking ice cream,” Matthias explains. “My biggest challenge was to ensure that they were enclosed by blue, since their helmets and jackets are highly reflective and show 360 degrees of the environment, and the reflection of a studio ceiling wouldn’t work too well under blue skies on a beach.

“The sand is from the Maldives. I shot the beach scenes in Los Angeles and Miami, the ice cream next to a Mister Softy truck in New York, and the guys in studio in Paris. These are truly international images.”
