Miller Mobley‘s portraits of singer Camila Cabello are notable not just because they are truly lovely—but because he shot them using an Apple iPhone 7 Plus in portrait mode, at the magazine’s request.
“It was interesting to see Camila’s response to shooting with the iPhone,” Miller noted in an interview about the shoot. “Because of her age and the generation she’s grown up with, an iPhone has always been around and accessible. For a 50-plus-year-old it might have been a different vibe, but with Camila it was just another camera, not a phone.”
In fact, the iPhone angle has garnered the shoot quite a lot of press. In an interview with Apple Insider, Miller explained that he had to spend more time on composition to allow for cropping limitations. “These were more thought out images than me taking more casual snapshots,” he said. “I wasn’t rapid-firing shots. It was moments here and there…the speed of shooting—you have to slow down, especially with Portrait mode.”
And in an interview with Mashable, he said, “My whole objective was to blend seamlessly my shots with the [Canon 5D Mark III] and [Mamiya] with iPhone shots. I want you to look at the images as a whole and [not] really think about the tool used to make them.”
